I can claim all the work in here to be mine, but none of it would have happened without the brilliant and adaptable minds I worked with over my decade plus. An exhaustive, comprehensive list of the collaborators I worked with is near impossible, but I’ve done my best and included a credits list, by project and timecode, for the artists at the bottom of the page. USA wanted to reintroduce Temptation Island to audiences, particularly with the new season premiering on their network, and looked to us to find a new, sexy visual voice. As is often the case, several excellent pitch options were offered, and one was selected… but that’s when the real work began. From that point we honed and then diversified the typography so that there were many styles available, in broadcast and three social aspect ratios, so that the promotional team had the most flexibility. The color palette solidified into a dark blue grad with hot pink highlights and the inverse, for maximum intra-editorial diversity. We stoked the flames even more by adding a warmer gradient to the bottom of the frame, really tying the whole scheme together. And though they’re rarely the sexiest pieces of any offering, the style guide and toolkits we put together were as hot as they were comprehensive (very). Spectrum Commercial Campaign&nbsp; Sometimes doing less is doing more. Having worked with Spectrum on their OOH Mobile campaign the previous year, as well as projects with the Originals team, the broadcast team, and Spectrum branding proper, they were still kind enough to think of us when an opportunity for a purely graphic commercial campaign came around. Instinctually, after hearing that premise, your brain always wants to go whole-hog, MK12 style kinetic type because it feels like you have to make up for the lack of photographic elements. Well not this time, kids… this time, it was all stripping back the messaging of the commercial to it’s core components: script, and color, and still delivering an emotional response. Restraint was our watchword. When we animate, make it matter. When we cut, emphasize it. If you’re going to pair messaging with illustration, pull back to the essentials so that copy stays the queen. It was like going back to school in the best way: set hard and fast rules and throw out most of the toolbox, and then find ways to create impact from the few pieces you have available. We were forced to think about tight editorial, getting 6 frames down to 2, working and reworking eases to maximize every move. SYFY Wire’s The Great Debate Promo / Show Package&nbsp; Following an initial logo and brand development phase for the live, touring version of The Great Debate, SYFY Wire came back with an opportunity to partner on spinning out that kernel into a full blown Promo Package and In-Show package. While developing two simultaneous packages can be a handful, it was a fantastic opportunity for a few reasons. First, we were able to strip back the the branding to what works best for broadcast, and expanding from there. Second, with the promotional and show designs being developed under the same roof, they could share DNA so that all visual representation is stemming from the same design and motion perspective. Helpful when you’re establishing a new series! A show with comedians set on a spaceship doesn’t seem the place to take yourself seriously, so our premise started there. Sizzling colors and laser lights on a living, mutating triangular void, borrowing from science fiction’s rich history of retro-future interface design was our solution. From the beginning we focused on mindfully designing and executing dynamic toolkits… every element had to be fully adaptive and responsive while maintaining the big and bold look. Our strategy was two-fold: don’t box ourselves in by over-designing elements in specific scenarios and secondly, providing multiple copy orientations and color options per element to ensure a robust and diverse toolkit. Hell, even our lens flares behave differently based on the letterforms input into the .ae file. Now that’s cookin’ with space-gas. +0000 The Portfolio of Kyle Miller https://kyylemiller.com/25-Days-of-Christmas Creative Direction Design Pitch Promo Package Stay Frosty Freeform 25 Days of Christmas Promo Package, Pitch&nbsp; You never pick favorites amongst your children, but if I did this would be my favorite baby that never grew up or did anything. Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas is a holiday staple, covering a month of programming in addition to swag and gifts for friends of the Freeform family. Who wouldn’t want to jingle those bells? My personal challenge here was to get away from the deeply textural, visually dense looks I felt I was becoming too comfortable with and pull it way back. Limit the representative art as much as possible; just work with color, shapes, and type to create the feel of the holidays. I also wanted this package to have a voice and speak to the audience through a combination of words and emojis. Youthful, sure… but isn’t that the season? We used dots and lines to create animated wrapping paper, the brand’s broadcast navigational arrows to create an evergreen forest, and we frosted the edges of the footage like looking out over a snowed-in neighborhood. We tied this all together with a snappy, editorial style of animation where we cut out most of the movement except for the beginning and ends, so it’s all ease and no filler. While we didn’t take the prize on this one, it’s still on my nice list. the Franco Roast, Comedy Central often came back to seek further pitches for Rob Lowe, Justin Bieber, and Bruce Willis and we did great work for them! But when Alec Baldwin came around, it was a big enough target that it was hard not to land a blow. Below you can see some initial tear pulls for a couple pitch directions, about as different as you can get. Luxury brands and furniture, fine textures and finishings on one hand versus wheat-pasted punk flyers made on the local library’s copiers on the other. And though the Tales of Manventure and Boston punk-inspired Baldwin! Baldwin! Baldwin! ended up on the cutting room floor, it was the latter that won the job and evolved into what you can see today. Between the pitch and the airing, there was a ton of expansion and exploration. We continuously honed the narrative, adding a classic film style open, carefully choosing the incidents and appearances to lock in on and their order throughout the process. Meanwhile, the color palette went through a similar process of research and development, eventually landing on a more sophisticated green and gold combination compared to the pitch boards, leaning darker and prime time with explosive pops of red. +0000 The Portfolio of Kyle Miller https://kyylemiller.com/Spectrum-Mobile-OOH Art Direction Design Print Out of Home Blue on Blue Spectrum Mobile OOH&nbsp; When you spend months in a chair, checking and rechecking two colors of blue to make sure the RGB and CMYK are as tight as possible, you don’t realize that what you’re working on is seen by thousands of people across the nation. Then one day, you’re walking in Williamsburg and boom, there it is, hand painted on a brick wall, surrounded by artisanal chicken and waffle places. Following the successes of our LA Live takeover, Spectrum came back to partner with us on their OOH Mobile campaign. We pitched thirteen distinct looks, playing with depth and color to maximize the impact of the Spectrum brand and messaging; our goal to find one striking design that plays beautifully graphically and paired with lifestyle photography… as simply as possible. The final result went out nationwide in a million different formats. Standard billboards and bus shelters, three different subway ratios ranging from long to, like, really really long, digital signage around MSG, full building takeovers, standard 2 sheet posters, and some formats that I don’t even think have names. Beyond playing nice graphically or with photography, the messaging varied for every aspect ratio and on top of that had to also work en español. As much as I think the final result is clean and beautiful, its real strength comes from its versatility while always keeping the brand standards and message hierarchy as the highest priorities. We pitched on the show package for Spike’s Guys’ Choice Awards, and they were looking for something that felt masculine but upscale. Like a black tie event at a lodge decorated by leather, wood, and antlers. It was the tenth iteration of this event, so they were looking for something a little special. I answered with this direction, borrowing from the era of vinyl records and the Blue Note label art direction. I always start the design process with a tear pull, grabbing from an unsorted personal store and a more targeted, inspiration-specific second pull, both of which you can see below. The kernels of type and color choices are born of these and evolve over time through rapid iteration into the final results that you see below. As mentioned above though, sometimes conditions change. A show graphics pitch can turn into a promo package job, and a pitch designed for the former might not always work out for the later. However, I am still proud of this work and can see some of the colors and imagery germinated here took root in the final product. I’m particularly proud of the crossed antler X for the 10th anniversary icon. approached to create a second 30 minute film for Ray Dalio of a vastly different nature than our previous economic film. This time we needed to tell the story of the guiding principles Ray developed and used throughout his life as he strove for personal and professional success. Our partnership with Mark Del Lima and his team from IDEO combined the message from Ray’s book with the hero’s journey into a half hour adventure. The design and animation style had to be accessible for all ages, simple and engaging. In the previous film we were living largely in a liminal, empty space allowing the concepts to speak for themselves. This time we were putting our protagonist character into rich and varied landscapes as they sought their goal, so the challenge became balancing the detail required to depict dense jungles without overwhelming the message with details. Our character animation needs also expanded, developing rig systems for a protagonist, a crew of talented individuals he meets along the way, as well as the litany of background characters filling the backgrounds. The final result is a film that takes us from the creation of the universe through the achievement of one man’s goals and passing those skills on to the next generation, and to the world at large.
